AUS professor conducts research at London School of Economics

In Spring Semester 2014, Karen Young, Assistant Professor in the Department of International Studies, is on leave from AUS and is a visiting researcher at the Middle East Centre (MEC) of the prestigious London School of Economics (LSE), UK. In Summer 2013, Dr. Young was one of four AUS faculty members who spent six weeks at the MEC as part of the Visiting Faculty Fellowship program organized between the Gulf Studies Center at AUS and the LSE. Dr. Young was granted a fellowship to pursue an on-going research project on the political economy of the UAE.

AUS Professor Examines Radar Technology in Hong Kong

Hasan Mir, Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, CEN, was awarded a Faculty Research Travel Grant in 2012.

How did you use the grant?

The funds were used for a collaborative visit with Dr. Kainam Wong at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU). Dr. Wong is a recognized authority in many areas related to ISR (Information, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) technology. Prior to joining AUS, I was with MIT Lincoln Laboratory, where I researched a variety of aspects related to radar technology.

AUS Professor Wins Qatar Foundation Award

Nasser Hamdan, Professor and Interim Head of the Department of Physics at the College of Arts and Sciences at American University of Sharjah (AUS), has won a Regular Poster Presentation Award at the Qatar Foundation Annual Research Conference (ARC’13). In addition to a trophy and certificate presented at the Award Ceremony on Monday, November 25, 2013, the award carries a valuable monetary prize. The award, according to Dr. Gautam Sen, Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies at American University of Sharjah, is ‘quite an honor’ and an ‘important recognition’ of Dr. Hamdan’s research.

Describe your research project

This project seeks to contribute to scholarly studies on the relationship between economic activities and religious life. Specifically, the study examines the roles that transnational business activities play in the religious beliefs and practices among Chinese Muslims. This required conducting field work among Chinese Muslim business communities in cities on China’s east coast, as well as Muslim concentrated cities in the northwest. The study strives to add to the ongoing discussions on the compatibility of Islam with modernity and non-Islamic cultures.
