Ever since it was established in 1997 by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the American University of Sharjah (AUS) aims to be a leading educational institution in the region. Even though it is fairly young compared to some of the other universities, not only has AUS been licensed by the Commission for Academic Accreditation of the Ministry of Higher Education Affairs in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), but it is also accredited in the United States of America by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

AUS professors to advise the Emirates Mars Mission

Last year, the UAE Government unveiled its plan to send an unmanned probe to Mars to study the atmosphere of the Red Planet, in celebration of the UAE’s 50th national day. It plans to launch the space probe in 2020, so that it arrives to Mars in 2021, just in time for the anniversary. The space probe will be the first Arab probe, and has been named Al Amal or “Hope.” Three American University of Sharjah faculty members, namely Dr. Tariq Majeed, Associate Professor of Physics, Randa As’ad, Assistant Professor of Physics and Dr. Nidhal Guessoum, Professor of Physics and Astronomy, all from the Department of Physics of the AUS College of Arts and Sciences, are part of the science team involved in the project.

AUS engineering alumnus awarded prestigious UK Government Chevening Scholarship

Waleed Hijazi, an American University of Sharjah (AUS) alumnus, was awarded the United Kingdom (UK) Government’s Global Scholarship, called the Chevening Scholarship. Hijazi, who graduated from the American University of Sharjah College of Engineering with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in Fall 2013, will receive full tuition and living expenses coverage to attend to Imperial College London to pursue a Master of Science in Transport and Business Management. The program is run jointly by Imperial College London and the University College London.

AUS graduate excels in photography

Is it a video or not? Have you ever asked yourself that question when watching a time-lapse?

For some who are not familiar with time-lapse, it is a photographic technique of taking a sequence of frames at set intervals to record changes that take place slowly over time. For example a camera can be set to capture an image of a particular scene every five seconds. These still photos captured every five seconds can then be played, for example at 30 frames per second, which will make appear to be moving faster and hence the idea of lapsing.

AUS Professor Examines Radar Technology in Hong Kong

Hasan Mir, Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, CEN, was awarded a Faculty Research Travel Grant in 2012.

How did you use the grant?

The funds were used for a collaborative visit with Dr. Kainam Wong at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU). Dr. Wong is a recognized authority in many areas related to ISR (Information, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) technology. Prior to joining AUS, I was with MIT Lincoln Laboratory, where I researched a variety of aspects related to radar technology.
