Making social media work for fresh graduates

Fresh university graduates seeking job opportunities should be active on social media in order to “be present in front of the right people,” said LinkedIn’s UAE territory director Sherif El Kheir February 7 at American University of Sharjah.

Speaking to about 50 AUS students at the Rock Your LinkedIn Profile workshop, El Kheir said that having a LinkedIn account is an effective way to connect with people who could possibly become mentors, or future bosses.

During the Islamic Golden Age, which lasted from the mid-8th century to the mid thirteenth century, scholarly learning was greatly prized by the Arabs and Muslims, and Arab scholars majorly contributed to developments in science and mathematics. Amongst these were the developments they made in astronomy. Arab astronomers made innovative discoveries and conducted research that was later adopted by astronomers from other parts of the world. Unfortunately, astronomy in the Arab world has declined, even though it is needed, not only particularly for religious purposes, but also for other philosophical purposes.

AUS professors to advise the Emirates Mars Mission

Last year, the UAE Government unveiled its plan to send an unmanned probe to Mars to study the atmosphere of the Red Planet, in celebration of the UAE’s 50th national day. It plans to launch the space probe in 2020, so that it arrives to Mars in 2021, just in time for the anniversary. The space probe will be the first Arab probe, and has been named Al Amal or “Hope.” Three American University of Sharjah faculty members, namely Dr. Tariq Majeed, Associate Professor of Physics, Randa As’ad, Assistant Professor of Physics and Dr. Nidhal Guessoum, Professor of Physics and Astronomy, all from the Department of Physics of the AUS College of Arts and Sciences, are part of the science team involved in the project.
