Greetings from Ohio!
Many of you are aware that I was undertaking a three-month run across the United States of America, a very serious ultra-marathon run from Los Angeles to New York.
On August 2, 2017, after running 3,941 kms, my dream to run from Los Angeles and New York to raise awareness of a lung disease known as pulmonary fibrosis came to an abrupt halt. I had three weeks left to run 922 kms to New York. At 8:30 that Wednesday morning, I was deliberately hit by a pickup truck when running on the shoulder of Highway US 40 approximately 20 miles west of Columbus, Ohio. The vehicle did not stop and the driver is yet to be found. The accident was widely covered in the media, such as on 10TV, the New Zealand Weekend Herald and ABC6.

One of the greatest things that happens at American University of Sharjah is being given the opportunity to make new friends. When you come here are as a freshman, new faculty or a new staff member, you quickly start to meet new people—people you take a class or two with, those living in the same dorm as you, your professors or people you will be working with on a regular basis.

Hasan Mir, Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, CEN, was awarded a Faculty Research Travel Grant in 2012.
How did you use the grant?
The funds were used for a collaborative visit with Dr. Kainam Wong at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU). Dr. Wong is a recognized authority in many areas related to ISR (Information, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) technology. Prior to joining AUS, I was with MIT Lincoln Laboratory, where I researched a variety of aspects related to radar technology.

Being a student at AUS is not just about studying, believe it or not. It is about becoming an active member of its community; developing it as well as developing yourself in the process. What I like about being part of this particular community is the distinct element of diversity present at AUS. No one would feel left out because there is a little bit of something for everyone. And even then, if there isn’t something for you, you could easily create your own student club.

I remember attending my first class at AUS and thinking to myself, this is the first day of the rest of my life. It was all too new to me, trying to get to class on time from building to building, figuring out what SBM, NAB, and PHY stood for, and getting used to calling my instructors “professor” instead of “teacher” or “miss / mister.”
