Ever since it was established in 1997 by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the American University of Sharjah (AUS) aims to be a leading educational institution in the region. Even though it is fairly young compared to some of the other universities, not only has AUS been licensed by the Commission for Academic Accreditation of the Ministry of Higher Education Affairs in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), but it is also accredited in the United States of America by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

AUS’ programs have also been accredited by different international organizations. The Bachelor of Science degree programs in chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering offered by the College of Engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The Bachelor of Science degree program in computer science offered by the College of Engineering is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET. The Bachelor of Architecture program of the College of Architecture, Art and Design is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) of the United States, while the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and the Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree offered by the School of Business Administration are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

AUS also has a large multicultural student body made up of 6,180 students, 458 graduate students, 5,553 undergraduate students and 167 achievement academy students, all from 99 different countries around the world. The American University of Sharjah aims to provide the students with an interactive learning environment, which is why there is approximately one professor for every 15 students.

AUS also aims to provide its students with the best equipment that the students require for a quality education. The library at the university has 140 work stations; 40 laptops for checkout; around 141,000 books and media items; approximately 220,000 eBooks; more than 50 databases; and more than 26,000 e-periodicals available for on and off campus use.

Apart from offering a well-equipped educational environment, AUS also offers its students a well facilitated sports environment. It provides its students with 23 sport facilities, including an Olympic sized swimming pool, tennis, squash and basketball courts, and a cricket ground. The university has 25 sports teams that have represented AUS in around 106 intercollegiate tournaments.

The American University of Sharjah also encourages its student body to be a part of various extracurricular activities. The university has 81 interest-oriented and cultural clubs that organize several events throughout the semesters.
