In a show of national unity and patriotism, American University of Sharjah raised a new flag on-campus at noon on Wednesday, November 6, 2013, in unison with the entire country to celebrate the inaugural UAE Flag Day celebrations.
Emirati students as well as university Emirati and expatriate officials accompanied by officers from Sharjah Police led the flag raising ceremony to demonstrate their love for the country.
"Holding the flag was a great honour for me as it has given me the feeling of pride and glory that I have as an Emirati," said Mohammad Al Thani, President of the AUS Emirati Cultural Club. Other club officials namely Ali Mohamed who is the club’s sport coordinator and Omar Mohammed the club’s treasurer also joined in the flag raising ceremony.
The celebration was attended by Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs; Dr. Cleve McDaniel, Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration; Paula Doyle, Director of Human Resources; Saeed Al-Shamsi, Director of Public Affairs; Basheer Daoud; Director of Finance, Varghese Thomas, Director of Budget and Planning; Dr. Munketh Taha, Director of Student Development and Organisation and other senior university officials.
The ceremony was also attended by Major Ahmed Mohammed Rashed Al Marri, Major Mohmmed Hassan Abdulla Al Mannaei and Officer Abdulrahman Abdulla Hassan from Sharjah Police.
The UAE Flag Day celebration coincides with the ascension of His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to the Presidency of the UAE. To celebrate the day, UAE flags were raised simultaneously at noon all across the country at many public and private institutions, buildings as well as at some people’s homes as people expressed patriotism and love for the country. It also provides an opportunity for Emiratis and expatriates alike to demonstrate their loyalty to the leaders of the United Arab Emirates.
