The Former Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofi Annan visited Sharjah to attend the second annual Government Communication Forum (GCF). While in Sharjah Dr. Annan also visited American University of Sharjah (AUS) and toured various parts of the campus.
In his speech on February 24 during the Government Communication Forum (GCF) Dr. Annan said that effective communication helps in resolving governance issues.
“The future needs to be built on three pillars: peace and security, equitable and just development, and the rule of law that upholds human rights," Annan said, speaking in English at the largely Arabic-language event.
He added that governments are still not communicating effectively with their nations, despite modern devices and technology. But he said this needed to change, because communication helps governments develop effective solutions to problems.
He added that social instability, terrorism and climate change have increased public dissatisfaction and anger. "Citizens would like to see their leaders take a long-term view on things, to be included in the decision-making process,” Annan said.
The forum was sponsored by the Sharjah Media Centre, under an Arabic theme which means “Effective Communication...Unified Speech” in English. Organizers said the forum was intended to focus on the need of moving from "talking to people" to "talking with people.”
The GCF also hosted government leaders, representatives of various government agencies and famous media personalities with prior experience in government communication.
