Seeking to provide more resources for businesswomen in the Gulf, faculty members in the School of Business Administration (SBA) at American University of Sharjah (AUS) have created a first-of-its-kind portal to highlight women holding executive positions in the region.

Dr. Linzi Kemp, Associate Professor of Management at AUS, and Linda McLoughlin, SBA Placement Director and Senior Lecturer of Marketing, collaborated with Dr. Norita Ahmad, Associate Professor of Marketing and Management Information Systems (MIS), to create the Women & Leadership portal, which includes videos, articles and a list of expert women in the region.

The expert list is a database of women who hold executive positions and/or who are specialists in various professional fields in the region. McLoughlin and Dr. Kemp, who alternate in teaching the Women in Leadership course, MGT 321, at American University of Sharjah every semester, invited all female AUS students to join the database, which is available at http://wil.insightsme.net.

Dr. Kemp said that the idea behind the portal was to make a “link between theory and practitioners in business life.” She said that journalists or conference organizers who want to contact female experts can easily go onto the site and find experts on a range of issues and topics, such as economics, business, sciences, arts, government, IT and more.

McLoughlin noted that the website fills a regional void. “There are very few learning resources that are Arab-centric and that showcase the positive work done by Arab women,” she added.

McLoughlin stated that an expert directory in Ireland, called Women on Air, inspired the expert women’s list created at SBA.

Journalists created the Irish directory, she said, to help address a lack of female voices in broadcast television.
