Most career service departments provide internship/job planning resources for current students, alumni support and networking opportunities, as well as access to prospective emplyees with business partnerships. Unfortunately, my students do not take advantage of careers services as much as they should.

AUS Professors Celebrate Book Launch

The International Studies (INS) department at American University of Sharjah (AUS) has celebrated the launch of two books co-authored by its faculty members.

Dr. Meenaz Kassam, assistant professor of sociology, co-wrote From Siva to Cyberspace with a team of authors outside AUS. The book examines online volunteerism in India.

AUS faculty and staff want more technology-enhanced classrooms

American University of Sharjah faculty and staff want more access to technology-enhanced classrooms, according to the results of a survey presented in a March 4 lecture.

Faculty Development Center Director Dr. Cindy Gunn, one of three speakers who presented the survey results, said that professors acknowledge the importance of integrating technology in their classrooms. They see it as increasing student access to course materials, as well helping them engage course content, she said, making wireless reach and stability essential on campus.

Its that time of the year again when almost all students feel boggled down with projects, papers, presentations as well as exam preparations. So when it comes to this time, opinions are divided, some come prepared and others may be thinking, well, exams are nearby and the time to study is now. Is it?

When you think about it, midterms, projects and quizzes are still in progress. So is it really the time to start preparing for the finals. Many students argue that the end of the semester is the time for submitting the projects. This begs the question, when is it the time to start preparing for the finals?

Syrians at AUS Celebrate Independence Day by Aiding Refugees

In a series of events held April 20 at AUS under the title “Syria— In the Name of the Homeland,” the American University of Sharjah’s (AUS) Syrian Cultural Club and Student Council raised AED 10,565 for charity.

Proceeds of the night, which celebrated the April 17 Syrian Independence Day, went to the UAE’s Red Crescent Society to aid Syrian refugees.

American University of Sharjah students prepare for elections

If you are a freshman student passing around the campus you might be confused by all the different posters posted around campus and people offering you free food and goodies.

Here’s what’s happening: It’s the Student Council election week. Basically, a number of candidates group themselves in teams and through these teams they are competing for the various positions on the Student Council Executive Board, committees, subcommittees as well as to represent the five university academic entities namely College of Architecture, Arts and Design; School of Business and Management; College of Arts and Sciences; College of Engineering and Achievement Academy Bridge Program. And the best part is, you get to VOTE.

Running for a Good Cause

Four members of the American University of Sharjah community will participate in the London to Brighton 100km ultra-marathon on May 25, 2013 to aid families affected by congenital heart defects. So far, they have raised approximately AED 30,000 for the cause.

U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Tretheway Speaks at AUS

U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Tretheway told the audience during an April 22 poetry-reading event at the American University of Sharjah that “the act of making the poem, the act of creation is happiness, pure happiness.”

The Pulitzer Prize winner was accompanied by Christopher Merrill, director of the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa.

AUS is seeking to reduce the number of students on academic probation
